History and Legacy

Akbari Fort was commissioned by Emperor Akbar in 1570, shortly after he annexed Ajmer into the Mughal Empire. The fort served as a strategic military outpost as well as a resting place for the emperor during his travels to Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti’s Dargah. Akbar was deeply influenced by Sufi teachings and often visited Ajmer, making this fort both a symbol of power and devotion. The fort is a fine example of Mughal architecture—simple yet powerful, with thick walls, arched gateways, and beautifully carved details.

In 1908, the fort was converted into the Government Museum of Ajmer. The museum houses a wide collection of artefacts from different periods, including the Gupta and Rajput eras. Highlights include medieval weapons, stone sculptures, miniature paintings, coins, and inscriptions. A walk through the museum is like stepping into a history book, with each gallery shedding light on India’s diverse and layered past. The fort stands today not just as a monument, but as a proud storyteller of Ajmer’s cultural heritage.
