Galle Face Green dates back to the Dutch colonial era but was developed further by the British in 1859. Initially laid out as a racecourse for horses, the wide-open green later became a popular recreation ground. During British rule, it served as a gathering point for cricket matches, parades, and ceremonial events. It is believed that the area was named "Galle Face" as it faced towards Galle, a historic port town in the south.

Today, Galle Face Green holds cultural, political, and recreational importance in Sri Lanka. It has witnessed major political rallies, public protests, and festive occasions. Despite urban development, the green space has remained a symbol of Colombo’s identity, offering a rare combination of natural beauty and cultural expression.
