Lhakhang Nagpo was built in the 7th century by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo as part of his quest to spread Buddhism and suppress evil spirits. According to legend, he released a black pigeon to determine the site for this temple—hence the name “Nagpo,” meaning black. It was constructed as one of the 108 temples intended to pin down a giant demoness whose body was believed to be spread across the Himalayas. The temple's location represents the demoness’s left foot, making it spiritually significant.
