History and Legacy

Jal Mahal was built in the 18th century by Maharaja Madho Singh I as a hunting lodge and summer retreat. Its unique location in the middle of Man Sagar Lake made it ideal for royal duck hunting parties. Over time, the palace saw several enhancements, especially under Madho Singh II, who added gardens and improved the structure.

Architecturally, Jal Mahal is a blend of Rajput and Mughal styles. Constructed with red sandstone, five stories of the palace stand tall, of which four are submerged when the lake is full. Though not open for public entry today, the palace once echoed with royal leisure and celebration. Restoration efforts have preserved its grandeur, making it one of Jaipur's most iconic landmarks. Surrounded by a lake revived through ecological conservation, Jal Mahal stands as a symbol of heritage coexisting with nature.
