History and Legacy

The construction of Umaid Bhawan Palace began in 1929 and was completed in 1943. It was commissioned by Maharaja Umaid Singh to provide employment to thousands of people suffering due to a severe drought and famine in the region. The palace was built using golden-yellow sandstone, featuring 347 rooms, and is a blend of Western technology and Indian architectural elements. Designed by British architect Henry Vaughan Lanchester, the structure showcases Art Deco interiors, an impressive central dome rising to 105 feet, and exquisite murals and furniture.

The palace continues to hold cultural and historical importance as it is still home to the royal family of Jodhpur. The museum within the palace displays an extraordinary collection of vintage cars, royal artifacts, clocks, and photographs that capture the grandeur and lifestyle of the royal family.
