Kandy Lake, also known as Kiri Muhuda (Sea of Milk), is a man-made lake nestled at the center of Kandy city, Sri Lanka. Created in 1807 by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, the lake adds a soothing charm to the sacred city and sits gracefully beside the famous Temple of the Tooth Relic. History and Legacy
Kandy Lake was built in 1807 by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, the last king of the Kandyan Kingdom. It was constructed to enhance the beauty of the Temple of the Tooth and to symbolize the sacredness of the area. According to legend, the small island at the center was used as a royal pleasure garden connected to the palace via a secret tunnel. The cloud-shaped white wall that lines parts of the lake is known as the “Walakulu Bamma” and was also constructed by the king. It adds a regal and unique artistic element to the area.
During colonial times, the British tried to drain the lake but failed due to its religious significance. Today, it stands as a tranquil centerpiece of Kandy and a historic landmark reflecting the city's proud heritage. While boating is no longer common, the lake remains an important gathering spot for cultural events, including the Esala Perahera, when the area is beautifully illuminated and filled with traditional performances.
