Experience the mystical force of Pokhara’s underground waterfall

Davis Falls (also known as Devi’s Falls or Patale Chhango) is one of the most popular natural attractions in Pokhara, Nepal. This stunning waterfall is not just about the cascading water—it’s about what lies beneath. The water from Phewa Lake flows underground through a mysterious tunnel after plunging over rocks, creating a thunderous and mesmerizing sight. The falls are surrounded by lush greenery, prayer wheels, and rock formations, offering a peaceful yet powerful experience. The name “Davis Falls” originates from a tragic yet legendary story of a Swiss woman named Mrs. Davis who was swept away by the waterfall in 1961. Since then, the site has drawn visitors for both its beauty and mystery. Adjacent to Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave, this destination is a must-visit for anyone seeking a unique combination of natural wonder and spiritual ambiance in Pokhara.

History and Legacy

Davis Falls is not only a natural wonder but also a site of tragic history. The name “Davis” comes from a Swiss tourist, Mrs. Davis, who was taking a bath in the nearby Phusre Khola in 1961. A sudden surge of water swept her into the underground passage, and her body was found days later in the cave beneath. In memory of the incident, the waterfall was named “Davis Falls” by her husband. The Nepali name “Patale Chhango” translates to “underground waterfall,” perfectly describing its mysterious course.

Over time, Davis Falls has become one of Pokhara’s iconic spots. Local legends and beliefs surround the waterfall, and nearby prayer wheels and sculptures create a spiritual atmosphere. The site also connects to the Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave, where the same water reemerges, creating a natural loop of mystery. Today, it serves as a blend of natural beauty, local folklore, and remembrance, attracting nature lovers, photographers, and pilgrims alike.
