Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten

Punakha

A Peaceful Hilltop Stupa Built for Bhutan’s Well-being

Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten is a spectacular hilltop stupa located in the Punakha Valley of Bhutan. Built by Queen Mother Ashi Tshering Yangdon Wangchuck, the chorten is dedicated to peace and protection for all sentient beings and was constructed over nearly a decade. Unlike many traditional chortens, this one is not just a religious site but also a spiritual offering envisioned to ward off negative forces and bring universal harmony. Reaching the chorten requires a pleasant 45-minute uphill hike through lush rice fields and pine forests, making the journey as enriching as the destination itself. Once at the top, visitors are greeted with panoramic views of the Punakha Valley and surrounding hills. The stupa’s architecture is adorned with Bhutanese spiritual symbolism, and the interior contains sacred images of wrathful deities intended to subdue evil and guide the faithful on their spiritual path.

History and Legacy

Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten was commissioned by the Queen Mother of Bhutan to promote peace, harmony, and stability in the kingdom and throughout the world. Completed in 2004, it took nearly ten years to construct, using traditional Bhutanese architectural knowledge and spiritual guidance. It reflects Bhutan's deep commitment to preserving its spiritual heritage while nurturing global well-being. The chorten's unique design includes several levels, each representing aspects of Vajrayana Buddhism and adorned with symbolic statues and murals.

Its construction was inspired by religious texts rather than engineering blueprints, emphasizing spiritual intent over structural convenience. The main deity enshrined is Vajrakilaya, believed to remove obstacles and protect against evil. Unlike many sacred sites that are part of daily worship, Khamsum Yulley was created as a visual representation of enlightenment and divine protection, a rare example of religious architecture serving both symbolic and meditative purposes. It remains a popular pilgrimage and meditation site for Bhutanese and international visitors alike.
