A Majestic Symbol of Peace and Prosperity Overlooking Thimphu
The Buddha Dordenma Statue is one of Bhutan’s most iconic landmarks, perched atop a hill in Kuenselphodrang Nature Park, overlooking the capital city of Thimphu. This massive golden statue of Shakyamuni Buddha stands at an impressive height of 54 meters, making it one of the tallest seated Buddha statues in the world. Built to fulfill ancient prophecies and to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the fourth King of Bhutan, the statue houses over 125,000 smaller Buddha figures inside. Surrounded by peaceful pine forests and panoramic views of the Thimphu valley, the site offers not just a religious experience, but also visual tranquility. Whether you're a spiritual traveler or a photography enthusiast, Buddha Dordenma is a must-visit destination that symbolizes peace, enlightenment, and Bhutan’s deep-rooted Buddhist heritage.

History and Legacy
The construction of the Buddha Dordenma Statue began in 2006 and was completed in 2015. Commissioned to mark the 60th birth anniversary of Bhutan’s fourth king, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the statue also fulfills an ancient prophecy found in the 8th-century texts of Guru Padmasambhava, foretelling the arrival of a large Buddha statue in the region to bring peace and prosperity. Made of bronze and gilded in gold, the statue houses 125,000 smaller Buddhas—100,000 measuring 8 inches and 25,000 measuring 12 inches—each crafted with care and devotion.
The site itself, Kuenselphodrang, is also significant. Historically, it served as a royal camp and has long held spiritual significance for the Bhutanese people. Today, the site combines artistic grandeur with spiritual resonance. With its serene atmosphere, forested surroundings, and sweeping views of Thimphu, Buddha Dordenma has become both a religious site and a popular tourist destination reflecting Bhutan’s blend of faith, monarchy, and national pride.
