History and Legacy
Banke Bihari Temple was established in 1864 by Swami Haridas, the spiritual guru of the famous singer Tansen. Legend says that Swami Haridas’s devotion brought Lord Krishna and Radha to earth in the form of Banke Bihari. The term “Banke” means bent at three places, symbolizing Krishna’s posture with a flute. The idol was originally worshipped in Nidhivan and later moved to the present-day temple. Unlike traditional temples where aarti is performed multiple times a day, Banke Bihari Temple conducts only one aarti annually—on Janmashtami.
